Our Programs

Just Moving On

Just Moving On is a ‘throughcare’ program to support men and women exiting prison, funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund and partnered with the Tasmania Prison Service and Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Just Time

Just Time is an eight-week program of attachment, relationship and wellbeing. Three main stakeholder groups participate in Just Time – the prisoners, who are the recipients of the program, the prison personnel who support and enable it, the facilitators and volunteers.

Our Research

We are undertaking research which will advance the evidence-base regarding the importance of literacy as a social determinant of health, community wellbeing, employment outcomes and desistance from crime.

Currently we have a short survey open on the importance of literacy: social determinant of health and pathway to desistance and resilience. We have commissioned the University of Tasmania, TILES, MENZIES to undertake this work.

Heart of Literacy

How we collectively make a difference to Tasmania’s and Australia’s literacy woes. #100%Literacy. Connect42 host reflective dialogues to share story and listen deeply on the topics of communicating and collaborating – linking these to literacy development.

100% Literacy

When given access to the right tools, we are all free and able to reach any opportunity. Unfortunately, right now only half of Tasmanians are functionally literate. In the justice system, it plummets to one in five, limiting our community’s participation in, and contribution to, a strong social and economic future. At Connect42, we want to ensure 100% literacy across Tasmania by 2030 to create the positive life prospects and equal opportunities that start with education. We know that connection through communication is the key to significant positive change.

Just Sentences

The Just Sentences pilot project is bringing speech pathology support to the literacy programs of a small number of inmates within the Tasmania Prison Service. These are men whose literacy skills have not yet moved very far along the literacy continuum. But they can! And they have! You can read in the original report, about the enormous difference it made to two inmates.

Sound Systems

The first Sound Systems was conducted in 2014, with a phonemically-based approach to adult literacy tutoring at the Glenorchy Library. A speech pathologist was brought into the adult literacy program at the library for the purposes of observing and learning from current practice and exploring the best ways strategies to enhance phonemic processing and language can be incorporated into the program for clients who exhibit significant gaps in these skills.
