Colleagues @ The Heart of Literacy 2020
Collaborative and generous sharing of knowledge and practice about… well… pretty much anything is the best and most healthy way to work and live. And this is certainly true of the work and living that is needed to help children and young people who have trouble communicating because they have Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
DLD has been called ‘the most common childhood condition that you’ve never heard of’*.
Well now you’ve heard of it. And there is incredible work already happening between educators, speech pathologists and parents to support the challenges of DLD. There’s lots more to do, but collaborative conversation is well and truly open.
Colleagues @ The Heart of Literacy 2020 will contribute to this conversation.
Because DLD is a disorder of language, it also affects written language. So DLD is a direct factor in many literacy problems. It is very relevant for us to understand it widely within our community.
Connect42, along with many others, are interested in building collaborative knowledge about DLD across professions. When educators and speech pathologists richly and warmly combine their knowledge and their practice about students’ language, things can really change positively for those young people. It’s amazing and wonderful and rewarding for everyone when this happens. We want this to be the norm.

Christine D’Arcy is an incredible speech pathologist who has been researching DLD in high school students through her work with the South Australian Department of Education.
Stuart Kelly is a wide-thinking Tasmanian primary school Principal who has been intentionally collaborating with speech pathologists in his schools for several years.
Kate Polglase is the warm and generous parent of a special child with DLD – parents know the journey right around the clock, 24/7.
